We have backups. Isn't that our disaster recovery plan?
A backup you have never restored under test conditions is an assumption, not a control. The session separates the two and shows what testing adds: an observed recovery time, a documented scope, and a dated record.
Does HIPAA actually require us to test, and how often?
The current Security Rule contingency plan standard at 45 CFR 164.308(a)(7) includes a Testing and Revision Procedures implementation specification, historically classified as addressable — which means assess it and either implement it or document a reasonable and appropriate alternative, not skip it. It does not name a frequency. OCR's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking of January 6, 2025 would go further: as summarized in law-firm write-ups of the NPRM, it would add annual contingency plan testing, a criticality analysis documenting restoration priority, and written procedures to restore critical systems and data within 72 hours of an incident. Those are secondhand readings of a long proposal, and the NPRM is a proposal rather than current law — confirm its status against HHS before you plan against it. We walk through both the rule as it stands and what the proposal would change.
Can we run a real test without taking the EHR down?
Yes — that is what test failover is for. It runs in an isolated environment rather than against production. Acronis states that with its Disaster Recovery service you can perform scheduled test failover for any server on a monthly basis, and describes test failover as simplified and automated. That is the difference between a test you can do during business hours and a test that never happens.
Our IT provider handles backups, so this is their obligation, right?
Under HIPAA the compliance obligation stays with the covered entity even when a service provider runs the backups. We cover how to split the work: who executes the test, who reviews the report, and who signs off that critical systems were restored in priority order.

- Is this a product pitch?
- It is a working session with a live test failover. Product capabilities are stated as Acronis states them, including licensing caveats.
- Do we need Acronis today to get value from it?
- No. The DR test method, the dependency ordering exercise and the evidence checklist apply regardless of what you back up with.
- Is every capability you show included in base Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud?
- No. Some features, including test failover, runbooks and DR orchestration, depend on the Advanced Disaster Recovery add-on rather than the base product. We flag which is which as we go.
- Will you quote a recovery time we can rely on?
- Not as a promise. The Acronis Advanced Disaster Recovery data sheet (copyright 2002–2022) positions RPOs and RTOs of less than 15 minutes using the Acronis RunVM engine; that is a vendor-stated capability under specific configurations and licensing tiers, not a palmiq SLA. Your real numbers come from your own test.
